Capstone Turbine Corporation • 21211 Nordhoff Street • Chatsworth • CA 91311 • USA Technical Reference: Capstone Model C30 Acoustic Emissions Inlet and Exhaust Tests An attempt was made to estimate both the treated and the untreated sound power radiated out of the inlet and the exhaust. The results are presented in Table 3. The method used to estimate the sound power is somewhat ineffective, but is most likely accurate within a few decibels (dB). The results indicate that the inlet silencer reduces the overall inlet noise by 26 dBA, and the compressor blade passing tone by 28 dBA. The overall untreated exhaust sound power is 92 dBA. The exhaust silencer reduces the exhaust noise by approximately 11 dBA. Most of the case radiated noise is contained in the 3.2 kHz (one-third octave) band, which represents the stator/magnet interaction in the generator. Table 3. Estimated Sound Power Levels of Primary Noise Sources Frequency Untreated Inlet (dBA) Inlet with Silencer (Treatment) (Note 1) (dBA) Untreated Exhaust (dBA) Exhaust with Silencer (dBA) Case 400 Hz 1.6 kHz 3.2 kHz 16 kHz Overall dBA 77 69 98 70 97 69 98 71 106 81 84 71 77 55 84 75 66 57 92 81 ~105 Note 1: The Treatment (referred to as the Inlet with Silencer) is the physical and mechanical noise abatement arrangements for both the Standard and the Industrial Model C30 MicroTurbine Packages. Acoustic Spectrum The acoustic spectrum for treated and untreated inlet, for treated and untreated exhaust, and for overall system sound power levels are presented in Appendix E. The spectra for the inlet and for the exhaust can be used for developing inlet and exhaust silencers. The spectrum shown for case-radiated noise was measured on the side of the open package, and is representative of case-radiated noise. 410025-001 Rev A (September 2002) Page 5 of 36 This information is proprietary to Capstone Turbine Corporation.
