Capstone Turbine Corporation • 21211 Nordhoff Street • Chatsworth • CA 91311 • USA Technical Reference: Heat Recovery Module for Model C200 Microturbine Table 1. Electric and Thermal Output Calculations Steps Rule Example* 1. Estimate maximum electric and thermal output for the given ambient Temperature Use Figure 2 and refer to C200 Product Spec (460045) for 90°F Ambient: 183 kW electric 266 kW thermal 2. Estimate electric and thermal output at the given Elevation Electric output de-rated per C200 Technical Reference (410066) Thermal de-rating in proportion to Electric de-rating, plus .5% per 1,000ft elevation for 1,500ft Elevation: 172 kW electric 248 kW thermal 3. Determine Correction Factor for Backpressure 4. Determine Correction Factor for Inlet Water Temperature 5. Determine Correction Factor for Water Flow 7. Estimate Temperature Rise for given Water Flow Electric Output de-rated .25% per inch WC (above ~ 70°F ambient) Use Inlet Water Correction Factor Equation: 1–(Temp[°F]–140)x0.00295 Use Figure 3 Use equation: 6.9 x Thermal Output [kW] divided by Water Flow [gpm] for 4 inch WC: CF = .99 for 165°F Inlet Water: CF = .926 for 200 gpm Water Flow: CF = 1.013 8°F Rise 173°F Outlet Temp 6. Calculate Estimated Electric and Thermal Outputs Electrical Output from Step 2 times Correction Factor in Step 3; Thermal Output from Step 2 times Correction Factors in Steps 4 and 5 170 kW electric 233 kW thermal * 90 °F Ambient, 1,500 foot elevation, 4 inch WC backpressure, 165 °F inlet water, 150 gpm Heat Exchanger Core The heat exchanger core is constructed of 316 Stainless Steel tubing with aluminum fins and is ASME certified. The inner wall of the core is stainless steel, and is supported by a painted carbon steel exterior. Exhaust inlet and outlet connections are 12-inch diameter bolted 150 lb flange. Water inlet and outlet connections are 4 inch diameter bolted 150 lb flange. Refer to O&I drawing 523646 for details. Exhaust backpressure through the heat exchanger at full power and with the exhaust diverter in full heat recovery is less than 2 inches water column. Allowable flow rates are 60 gpm (3.8 l/s) minimum to 300 gpm (19 l/s) maximum. The core is designed for maximum 150 psig (10.3 bar), and the system includes a 150 psig ASME relief valve. The relief valve releases at a maximum rate of 75 gpm (4.7 l/s). Water pressure drop through the core is shown in Figure 3 as a function of water flow rate. The heat exchanger core and inlet/outlet headers hold approximately 13 gallons (49 liters) of water. 410070 Rev.
