1. Executive Summary: In September 2000 Capstone Turbine Corporation commenced work on a US Department of Energy contract to develop and improve advanced microturbines for power generation with high electrical efficiency and reduced pollutants. The Advanced MicroTurbine System (AMTS) program focused on: 1) The development and implementation of technology for a 200 kWe scale high efficiency microturbine system 2) The development and implementation of a 65 kWe microturbine which meets California Air Resources Board (CARB) emissions standards effective in 2007. Both of these objectives were achieved in the course of the AMTS program. At its conclusion prototype C200 Microturbines had been designed, assembled and successfully completed field demonstration. C65 Microturbines operating on natural, digester and landfill gas were also developed and successfully tested to demonstrate compliance with CARB 2007 Fossil Fuel Emissions Standards for NOx, CO and VOC emissions. The C65 Microturbine subsequently received approval from CARB under Executive Order DG-018 and was approved for sale in California. The United Technologies Research Center worked in parallel to successfully execute a RD&D program to demonstrate the viability of a low emissions AMS which integrated a high- performing microturbine with Organic Rankine Cycle systems. These results are documented in AMS Final Report DOE/CH/11060-1 dated March 26, 2007. 2. 3. 4. Award No. and Name of Recipient: Capstone Turbine Corporation; DOE Project ID # DE-FC26-00CH11058 Project Title and Name of Project Director: Advanced MicroTurbine System (AMTS), Dr. Jeff Willis. Date of Report and Period Covered: Final Technical Report dated March 31, 2008 for project work September 28, 2000 through December 31, 2007. 5. Comparison of Accomplishments with Goals/Objectives The goals of both the C200 development and the low emissions C65 were achieved in the course of the AMTS project. The C200 program completed conceptual and detailed design, rig development, component and system testing and demonstration of four systems with an average power output of 218 kW and net electrical efficiency of 33.7%. The first commercial contracts for the C200 product were signed in 2007. C65 exhaust emissions were reduced from previous requirements for NOx by 86%, carbon monoxide (CO) by 98%, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by 98% using modified Capstone injectors and control software in combination with a CO post oxidation catalyst. Compliance with CARB 2007 Fossil Fuel Emissions Standards using natural gas was demonstrated, approved under EO DG-018 and the system was approved for sale in 2007. 3
