Capstone Turbine Corporation • 21211 Nordhoff Street • Chatsworth • CA 91311 • USA Application Guide: C200 Hazardous Location Turbine Assembly Acoustic Emissions Precautions The Capstone turbine is designed to produce safe acoustic emissions. However, when working at a radius of 10 meters (or 33 feet) from an enclosed Capstone turbine, sound level exposure will average approximately 65 dBA. Capstone recommends that hearing protection be worn when working on or in the immediate vicinity of operating turbines for extended time periods. Other acoustic emissions regulations may apply to your specific installation location. Always check to be certain that your installation complies with all codes required by the local jurisdiction. Compliance with Hazardous Location Requirements The Capstone C200 hazardous location turbine assembly employs a specialized enclosure and other components that fulfill the requirements for equipment used in Class I Zone 2 (CIZ2) locations. The following paragraphs describe how the C200 hazardous location system conforms to these requirements. Hazardous Location Certifications The C200 hazardous location turbine assembly conforms to the requirements for equipment intended for use in partially explosive atmosphere (ATEX) as specified by EU Directive 94/9/EC. It is certified for use in Zone 2 hazardous locations as defined by IEC 60079-10. A Zone 2 location is a place in which an explosive atmosphere consisting of a mixture with air of flammable substances in the form of gas, vapor or mist is not likely to occur in normal operation but, if it does occur, will persist for a short period only. Typical areas classified as Zone 2 are oil and gas production facilities, where combustible gases and fuel fumes are handled within closed containers, but may leak to the atmosphere in case of equipment malfunctions, or emergency situations (e.g. vent valves). Examples of such installations are refineries and offshore oil and gas production platforms. The C200 hazardous location turbine assembly has received the following CE certification: • Equipment Group II: Electrical equipment intended for use in places other than mines with an explosive gas atmosphere. • ATEX Category 3G: Equipment suitable for use in Zone 2 location. • Explosive Protection (Ex) Type px: Explosive protection provided by pressurization and purging per IEC 60079-2. • Gas Group IIA: Gases with an ignition energy of 180 μJ or more. The typical gas in this group is propane. • Gas Group IIB: Gases with an ignition energy of 60 μJ or more. The typical gas for this group is ethylene. • Temperature Class T1: Rated for 450 °C (842 °F). 480047 Rev. B (November 2010) Page 8 of 82 Capstone reserves the right to change or modify, without notice, the design, specifications, and/or contents of this document without incurring any obligation either with respect to equipment previously sold or in the process of construction. The C200 hazardous location turbine assembly requires an external controller for operation, control and monitoring of the system. The controller must be located in a non-hazardous location. NOTE
