Project Background The project had several aims: to reduce the amount of nitrogen leaking from agricultural manure to the land; to reduce the release of the greenhouse gas methane into the atmosphere; to improve the fertiliser quality of the manure used on the land; and to provide energy services to a newly-built housing developmentontheoutskirtsof Laholm. The project started in 1991 and began operation in 1993. Since then the biogas plant has provided 3,0004000 m3/day of gas, producing 450 kW of electricity and 650 kW of heat. Schematic diagram of the Laholm plant. The Project The biogas plant processes about 30,000 tonnes/year of manure, sourced from farms in the vicinity of Laholm (southern Sweden), and around 5,000 tonnes of organic waste from industry. The waste is transported from source to the CHP plant in closed containers. Itispasteurisedat70oC for one hour in a pre-treatment tank before being transported to the bio- reactor. The reactor has a volume of 2,250 m3, and is topped up with about 100 tonnes/day of waste from the pre-treatment tank. Heat exchangers are used to pre-heat any new, cold waste before it enters the bio-reactor. The waste is kept in the bio-reactor for 2025 days at 38oC. During this time, 4050% is transformed into biogas this equates to 3,0004,000 m3/day of gas. The methane-enriched biogas produced in the reactor is transported 2 km to Trädgårdsstaden (Garden City), a newly developed residential area outside Laholm. Here the gas is burnt in a gas engine that has an input capacity of 1.2 MW. The use of biogas in the CHP plant reduces the need for fossil fuels, thereby cutting CO2 emissions. In addition, by burning methane (aPDF Image | Biogas Combined Heat and Power in Sweden
