Capstone Turbine Corporation • 21211 Nordhoff Street • Chatsworth • CA 91311 • USA Technical Reference: Advanced Power Server (APS) 5.2. Dispatch Sequencing A MultiPac control scheme can include several settings, such as user start and power demand or managed load with load balancing. Without an APS only one MultiPac settings configuration can be created for the single physical master. In contrast, an APS can configure groups with settings that differ from one another. Each MultiPac setting configuration in an APS is called a “dispatch sequence,” and several different dispatch sequences can be defined and saved. Dispatch sequences are defined independently of groups, and then assigned to groups as necessary. Each group can be assigned a different dispatch sequence or multiple groups can share the same dispatch sequence. A single group can also use different dispatch sequences, switching between sequences based on a Time of Use (TOU) setting. Refer to paragraph 6.8, Group Operational Configuration, for instructions on creating and assigning dispatch sequences. 5.2.1. Start Dispatch Each group can be set up to have automatic starting logic that determines which turbines are started and stopped based on unit capacity and turbine numbering within a group. This supports the functionality where not all turbines within a group run at the same time. 5.2.2. Run Time Balancing The APS monitors the operating hours of each turbine and can automatically control which units run to equalize the operating hours of the turbines in a given group. By doing this, the user aligns the scheduled maintenance of the turbines in a group. 5.2.3. Electrical Load Following The APS in Grid Connect mode can automatically control the import of electricity from the utility. This is accomplished by connecting a Modbus slave-compatible digital power meter at the Point of Common Coupling (PCC) with the utility, and using the power feedback to control the turbines’ power output. The APS automatically adjusts the turbines’ output to maintain the power being purchased from the utility to a level set by the user. This functionality can only be associated to a single group of turbines, but other groups of turbines can be set to operate in operating modes that allow them to cover the building base load, and this group can then regulate the power that will be purchased from the utility. 5.2.4. Power Dispatch Modes The APS can be set up to operate turbine groups using three different control modes. For each mode, the APS uses the maximum power capability of each turbine at the existing operating conditions as determined by the turbine itself. This allows the APS to not overload any given turbine and to correctly calculate the maximum capacity of the operating turbine group at any given time. The control modes are described in the following paragraphs. 5.2.4.1 Load Balancing In the load balancing mode the load is shared equally between all of the turbines in the group, and all turbines in the group are turned on. The load balancing algorithm takes the power demand of the group and equally distributes the load to each turbine in the group until it reaches 100% capacity. This mode is available for both Grid Connect and Stand Alone groups. 410079 Rev.
